I'm all over stripey things this season, and i do love the nautical look, but I always hesistate a little because I don't want it to look costumey. I'm not digging this girl's pants but I do have a navy skirt that'll work nicely with my stripey shirts.

Polka Dots and Purple

First, I'd like to say welcome to some of my new readers! I'm so glad you've stopped by! Please be sure to leave comments--this type of interaction is what makes the whole blogging thing work right? If you have a blog, I'll stop by it too so I can learn a little bit about you and your style. :)

Well this past week was a bit dull outfit-wise because of the crazy weather--one day of cold weather meant I had to dig out my wool pants and a sweater (seriously!), the next day summer-like temperatures, and several rainy days as well. And let me tell you, you will RARELY see any pictures of me in rainy weather because my hair gets so frizzy.

The crazy temperatures partially explain my outfit from a couple of days ago--short sleeves and tights! It was an excuse to wear my purple tights, which I love. I also love this dress, or top. I'm not sure which it is, I've also worn it as a top with shorts or jeans underneath.

A few things about me and my personal style:
1. I love tights and cozy sweaters. Autumn is my favorite season because of the clothes--cozy sweaters, tights, and boots are my favorite articles of clothing.
2. My favorite color is purple.
3. I love Anthropologie, it's my favorite store. I always ask for Anthro gift cards for birthdays and Christmas, otherwise I'd never be able to afford their clothes. I also like to shop at TJMaxx and DSW (shoes).  Although I like inexpensive shoes, I do not like cheap shoes. I've been burned way to many times by a cheap pair of shoes, and I've learned my lesson to splurge a little bit on slightly better quality footwear.
4. I used to work on Wall Street--that meant lots of power suits and long hours. But the upside was living in NYC!
5. I moved to DC recently because my fiance moved here. I now work at a non-profit. It's been quite an adjustment in many different ways, but the weirdest adjustment is tyring to ditch the conservative clothes and have a little more fun with my work style. I still have to dress pretty polished for work, but it's nothing like on the Street. It was almost easier to throw on a suit everyday! You'll probably see me write frequently about trying to incorporate more patterns, colors, and accessories into my work wardrobe.

Well how 'bout these apples??!!? The lovely and stylish Jessica Schroeder of What I Wore featured various bloggers showing off how they wear Breton stripes, and I'm one of them! That's me, top row, third photo!!

Like many others, I'm loving the nautical look/Breton stripes look for this season. I had coveted that Quiksilver dress and wore it on a weekend away (blogged about it here). It's comfy, cute, easy to dress up or down, and I like that it's a dress--a way to incorporate the trend into my wardrobe that's different from all my striped tops.

I love the style blogging community and seeing how other people style things, and it's great to see a bunch of looks of the same theme all in one place. Am getting ideas for the rest of my stripey clothes just waiting to be worn in my closet. Thanks Jessica!

Crossroads

This is my favorite skirt ever! (Well, besides this one). I've had it for a few years and wear it spring, summer, fall and winter (looks really cute with riding boots). It's one of my go-to pieces, and I just love the multi-colored stripes that go in different directions and the fluttery hem. This outfit is pretty simple, but it's also kind of symbolic of things going on in my life. I need to simplify things, get "back-to-basics," focus on what's important to me, what my staples are, etc., not just in my closet but in my life.

I recently heard of this speech for the Class of 2010. It was originally a column written by Mary Schmich for the Chicago Tribune in 1997, but then I also heard it was dedicated to the class of 1999, and then turned into a song by Baz Luhrmann (the Moulin Rouge guy??!). Anyway, it's been around for a while, but I didn't know of it until this past weekend--didn't even hear of it when I graduated. I find it appropriate for some of the things going on in  my life now. I'm at a career crossroads for sure, and after having moved to a new city and gotten engaged in the last couple of years, am at a bit of a general life crossroads too. So between this speech and my trusty skirt, I'm reminding myself to refocus on what's important, what keeps me grounded, and not take life too seriously.


Wear sunscreen.

If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.
Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, it's only with yourself.
Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.
Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.
Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.
Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.
Live in New York City once, but leave before it makes you hard. Live in Northern California once, but leave before it makes you soft. Travel.
Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Repect your elders.
Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.
